Catch a Glimpse of Local Life in Kilpisjärvi
Discover the unique spirit of Kilpisjärvi with a local guide who has called this remote Arctic village home for nearly two decades. This small group tour invites you to hear about the daily life in Finland’s only mountain village and connect with the traditions that shape life far above the Arctic Circle.
Guided Village Walk and Insights into Arctic Life
Your guide will meet you in the village center and lead you on a leisurely stroll. As you walk, she shares stories about the village's history and the realities of living in the far north. You’ll learn how nature, traditions, and resilience define this unique corner of Lapland. The pace is easy and relaxed, giving you time to enjoy the surrounding mountain landscapes and ask any questions you might have about local life and culture.
Sámi Experience at Tornensis Family Homestead
Your walk continues to the Tornensis Family Homestead, where you are warmly welcomed into a traditional wooden hut around an open fire. Here, a member of this local reindeer herder family shares insights into Sámi traditions and the ancient practice of reindeer herding.
While you enjoy the audiovisual presentation The Year of the Reindeer, dry reindeer meat (kuivaliha) is grilled over the fire. You are invited to taste this Arctic delicacy along with a cup of hot berry juice and a local pastry. Afterwards, you will step outside to meet the reindeer and feed them.
Throughout your visit, your local guide remains by your side to assist and enrich the experience before walking back together to the village center.
